The Museum is located in the basements of the former prison, built at the same time as the Warsaw Citadel, the two representing the main centers of isolation and repression of Poles by tsarist authorities prior to 1915. Between 1939-1944, it was one of the main Gestapo prisons in the General-Government. During the occupation, approximately 100,000 people were imprisoned in Pawiak, 37,000 were murdered,
and 60,000 were sent to concentration camps.
One of the most important exhibits is a reconstructed corridor in the prison’s Section VII, as well as five cells, including the quarantine and the death cell. The Museum
also features a pillar from the main entrance gate; the Pawiak Tree Monument – a bronze copy of the famous elm tree, a witness of history, on which families of the victims have put up epitaph tablets since 1945; a concrete wall with sandstone blocks decorated with symbolic sculptures and the prison courtyard with an obelisk by Zofia Posiłowska.

The Wilanów Palace is one of the most important monuments of Polish Baroque. Built for King John III Sobieski at the end of the 17th century and extended (east and west wings) by subsequent owners, it represents the characteristic spatial axis design with a ‘entre cour et jardin’ (between courtyard and garden) residence. Its unparalleled importance lies in the originality of the architecture and the paintings and sculptures decorating the facade, drawing on antique symbolism to glorify the Sobieski family and the king’s military triumphs.
Palace interiors with the original artistic decor and lavish furnishings represent three epochs from the 17th to the 19th century. The first floor houses the Gallery of Polish Portrait from the 16th to the 19th Century, featuring monarchs, representatives of great aristocratic families, distinguished Poles and cultural animators. The two-level Wilanów gardens surrounding the Palace combine several stylistically distinct parts – a Baroque garden, a romantic English-Chinese park, an English landscape park, and a Neo-Renaissance park – into a harmonious entity, regulated by an overall concept
and design. It is enclosed by a lake at the east and a cascading stream at the south, and ornamented with sculptures, fountains and small landscaped architecture.

One of the Europe’s finest parks laid out in the 17th century by S. Lubomirski. Its current form is the result of the ideas of King Stanisław August Poniatowski (1732-1798), owner of the Łazienki in 1764. During a period of almost 30 years, on the 80 hectares of the park, the summer residence of the monarch was built, the park re-designed and several buildings constructed. During this period (1772-1793),
Dominik Merlini remodeled the old bathing pavilion from the 17th century, and built the Palace on the Island, a splendid Neo-Classical palace to a Tylman of Gameren design.
The interiors of the Palace are decorated with historical furniture and works of art. On the first floor, visitors can admire the Room of Bacchus, the Bathroom, the Ballroom, the Cabinet of Portraits, the Room of Solomon, and the Rotunda with statues of reigning monarchs, the Painting Gallery, the Chapel and the Dining Room, memorable for the ‘Thursday lunches’ organized by the King. On the second floor are the King’s Apartments: a small gallery of paintings, a room with a balcony, a cabinet, a bedroom, a dressing room and an officers’ room. During the reign of Stanisław August, the Amphitheatre, the work of Jan Chrystian Kamstezer from 1790-1793, was built. As was: the Old Orangery with the Royal Court theater, the White Cottage and the Myślewicki Palace, the interiors of which can be visited. The park surrounding the palaces was laid out in 1774-1784. It joins the elements of a regular French park with the characteristics of an English garden. Other historical buildings in the Royal ¸azienki are worth seeing: the Reservoir, the New Guardhouse, the Old Guardhouse, the Hermitage, the Egyptian Temple, the Temple of Diana and the New Orangery.
Today, all these historical buildings, housing many works of art, are museums. In the Łazienki you will also find the Museum of Polish Emigration and the Museum of Hunting and Horseriding.

Robbed and destroyed in a barbaric way between 1939-1944, it was rebuilt 1971-1984 with the use of fragments of the building which had survived.

The Warsaw Rising Museum, located in a former tram power plant, has become one of the most popular places to visit in the capital.
Opened on the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the battle for Warsaw, it is a tribute the city’s inhabitants have paid to those who fought and died for the freedom of Poland and its capital.
The exhibition tells the story of the battle and of everyday life during the Warsaw Uprising against the background of the terror of occupation. It shows the complex international situation, and continues into post-war communist times to trace the Insurgents’ fate in the People’s Republic of Poland. Its 750 exhibits and approximately 1000 photographs displayed on an area of more than 3,000 sq.m. together with films and sound recordings present the history of the days immediately preceding the outbreak of the Uprising, through its subsequent stages, to the departure of the Insurgents from Warsaw and their fate. As one of its attractions, the Museum features a replica of the Liberator B-24J bomber.
