Travel - Getting around Warsaw

Warsaw Public Transport

Warsaw by Taxi

Rule Number 1 - Do not take a taxi from a taxi rank or you will pay an extra 30% for your journey. Order one by phone or get someone else to order you one.

Rule Number 2 - At the airport, you will almost certainly be approached by someone offering to drive you to the city. Refuse politely because they will be unofficial taxi drivers and you will pay accordingly plus they will not be insured.

It is advisable to book a taxi by telephone, or to ask the price first if you hail it in the street.

Warsaw by Car

We've said it a few times now, DON'T DO IT! Not only will you be driving on the wrong side of the road, you will be avoiding trams, pedestrians, other drivers, a mind-boggling one-way system and you will be lost (sounds like fun, doesn't it?). Finding a parking place can be difficult at the best of times because it is severely restricted in the Old and New Town and there are three different parking enforcement agencies out to get you. For those of you who have no choice and have to drive, below you will find information about Car Rental companies in Warsaw or go to our Car Rental section.

Warsaw by Public Transport

SAFE, EFFICIENT, CHEAP, CITY-WIDE - That's the way to do it. You have a network of trams, buses and the Metro at your disposal. Avoid the traffic, the heat, the cold and get to where you want to go to quickly (can you tell that we are advocates of the Warsaw Public Transport system?).

You can purchase your ticket from any of the little kiosks that you will find in the town or from most newsagents. Tickets all cost the same (just a couple of zloty) and you can travel any distance within Warsaw.

When you board the bus or tram, just insert your ticket into the little brown and orange box to get it stamped then keep hold of it, it's likely that it will be checked by a plain-clothes ticket inspector.

Warsaw’s municipal transport consists of trams, city buses, suburban buses and the underground (metro).

Warsaw's Metro has one line, which joins Bielany District (Młociny station) with its southern part Ursynów (Kabaty station). The Metro runs between 5 a.m. and midnight with trains every 3-4 minutes during peak hours, and every 7-8 minutes during off-peak hours. On Friday and Saturday they also run after midnight every 15 minutes until 2.45 a.m.
Tickets must be punched at the entrance to the platform.
The same ticket, with the inscription "ZTM Warszawa" is valid for all means of municipal transport, including city and suburban lines and the Metro. Tickets are best bought at newsagents but can be bought from the drivers of trams and buses.
