We've already posted a few tips here for you to read and below you will find a few Insider Tips that we think will help you:
Take a FREE walking tour! - Free Walking Tour Krakow every day at 11am in front of St Mary's Square! It's fun and free so it's not to be missed! On this tour you'll be taken all around Krakow by a friendly and knowledgeable guide. Some of the sites you'll visit on the tour include Wawel Castle and Cathedral, the medieval city walls, the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz and many more.
Visit Auschwitz - Do NOT take an organised tour to Auschwitz, take the local bus.
Wawel Castle and Cathedral - Don't forget to hire audio-guide in Wawel Cathedral. You will hear a lot of interesting things. You can visit almost all of the rooms of Wawell Castle free of charge on Sundays!
Take a trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine - A must see and again, avoid paying excess fees to a tour company, you can use public transport to get there!
Pickpockets - The most common crime in Krakow is pick pocketing. Tourists are the most targeted since they often carry large quantities of cash and valuables, so be extremely wary! The worst spots for pick pocketing is in busy crowded areas such as trains, trams, stations, and highly populated touristy areas. As a precaution always keep an eye on your bags and luggage, if carrying cash, valuables or passports, make sure they are deep inside your bag and out of reach. Always keep photocopies of any travel documents just in case anything does go astray!
Drinking / Drugs Pace yourself when out on the town! The drinks are cheap, the percentage is strong and you’ll be having such a laugh you won’t even realize how much you’ve consumed…that is, until the next day! In an unfamiliar town this is not only stupid, but very dangerous! You could become disorientated, lost, loose you valuables, and also be more exposed to theft and rape. Know your limit; it’s really NOT worth it!
Also, when it comes drugs, don’t even consider it! This really will get you in deep trouble since there is a zero tolerance policy in Poland. If caught by the authorities, you could find yourself staying for an extended trip in this wonderful city….only, on the inside of a jail cell!
Fights Poland is still not accustomed to mass tourism, and rowdy behavior from groups of tourists is looked down on. Unfortunately due to this there is a bit of friction between the British and the Poles. The British have a reputation for being rowdy, drunk and violent due to the popularity of stag and hen does’, and this can often lead to fights! Whatever happens, DON’T get involved, you WILL be thrown in jail by the authorities and face a heft fine and hose down….literally!
Water To prevent minor stomach upsets, avoid drinking Krakow's tap water. Generally it’s probably okay to drink, but the microorganisms are different depending on different countries, so it’s not even worth risking it. Even the Poles prefer bottled water.
Night Time Avoid dimply lit areas and parks at night; stick to more populated central areas where you will be a lot safer.
