It is a world of cozy streets and historical churches. These are also perfectly preserved fortifications, ranked among the biggest in Europe, and interesting harbour architecture.
If you enjoy spending your free time actively, Gdańsk attractions are just what you are looking for. The choice is wide: picturesque cycling and walking paths, kilometres of beaches and one of Poland's largest zoos. Gdańsk is an active city for active people.
Pickpockets - The most common crime in Gdansk is pick pocketing. Tourists are the most targeted since they often carry large quantities of cash and valuables, so be extremely wary! The worst spots for pick pocketing is in busy crowded areas such as trains, trams, stations, and highly populated touristy areas. As a precaution always keep an eye on your bags and luggage, if carrying cash, valuables or passports, make sure they are deep inside your bag and out of reach. Always keep photocopies of any travel documents just in case anything does go astray!
Drinking / Drugs Pace yourself when out on the town! The drinks are cheap, the percentage is strong and you’ll be having such a laugh you won’t even realize how much you’ve consumed…that is, until the next day! In an unfamiliar town this is not only stupid, but very dangerous! You could become disorientated, lost, loose you valuables, and also be more exposed to theft and rape. Know your limit; it’s really NOT worth it!
Also, when it comes drugs, don’t even consider it! This really will get you in deep trouble since there is a zero tolerance policy in Poland. If caught by the authorities, you could find yourself staying for an extended trip in this wonderful city….only, on the inside of a jail cell!
Fights Poland is still not accustomed to mass tourism, and rowdy behavior from groups of tourists is looked down on. Unfortunately due to this there is a bit of friction between the British and the Poles. The British have a reputation for being rowdy, drunk and violent due to the popularity of stag and hen does’, and this can often lead to fights! Whatever happens, DON’T get involved, you WILL be thrown in jail by the authorities and face a heft fine and hose down….literally!
Water To prevent minor stomach upsets, avoid drinking tap water. Generally it’s probably okay to drink, but the microorganisms are different depending on different countries, so it’s not even worth risking it. Even the Poles prefer bottled water.
Night Time Avoid dimply lit areas and parks at night; stick to more populated central areas where you will be a lot safer.
